How do they play?
Four-Ball Matches
2 US golfers v 2 European golfers each play their own balls, hence the name, 4 balls. The team with the lowest score wins the hole. If tied, each team wins half the hole. At the end of 18 holes, the team that won the most number of hole takes the point.
Foursomes Matches
2 US golfers v 2 European golfers play 2 balls. Each team plays one ball, alternating shots. The team with the lowest score wins the hole. If tied, each team wins half the hole. At the end of 18 holes, the team that won the most number of hole takes the point.
Singles Matches
Single is a one-on-one match. The lower score on each hole wins the hole. Ties result in halved holes. The most number of holes (not the regular scores) takes the point.
Schedule
Day 1: 4 Foursome in the morning & 4 Four-ball in the afternoon. Total points available: 8
Day 2: Same as Day 1. Total points available: 8
Day 3: 12 Singles. Total Points available: 12
Who wins?
At the end of the day, there are total 28 points available. The team to take 14.5 or higher wins the Ryder Cup 2023.
Interesting Tidbits you can discuss with people
1. You don't have to win - technically. There are total 28 points available and a team needs 14.5 points to claim the trophy. If they tie? The previous winner takes the trophy without playing extra rounds. US won the last cup.
2. Concession: Yes! They have gimme putts! Sometimes it causes controversies - just like we do. And when the opponent makes you hit an 18 inch putt?
